Defining "retention"

If a student leaves college on terms that the student considers to be successful, the college should also consider itself successful concerning that student. The focus is not on graduation rates, but on the attainment of educational goals/objectives.

It is almost a cliché that when students are asked why they voluntarily withdrew from school, they will almost always cite the following at their top three reasons: money, time, and personal reasons.  However, research has revealed more detailed reasons for why students choose to leave their school:

There are several principles of student retention that seem to be generally agreed upon.  This page will high-light some of these principles once I complete this section.
