Ten steps for implementing a student retention effort

Noel, Levitz and Saluri (1985) outline ten basic steps for implementing a campuswide retention effort.

  1. Decide to Act
  2. Create Need
  3. Identify Supporters
  4. Assemble Start-Up Committee
  5. Formalize Effort
  6. Convene Committee and Display Data
  7. Begin Implementation
  8. Establish Priorities for Action
  9. Gain Top-Level Support
  10. Assess Impact

Noel-Levitz has since re-worked these steps into a set of six steps for student retention planning (Low, 2000).  These steps include:

  1. Assess your campus readiness
  2. Set goals by identifying issues you can resolve
  3. Integrate new retention strategies within existing programs and services
  4. Develop an evaluation plan for each new strategy
  5. Establish reasonable timelines and assemble the resources needed
  6. Recognize, reward, and celebrate your successes
